Inspired from the term Alex Horne used to ‘spread the seeds’ as in words…and come back to them to water them every now and then. This gave me the thought of creating an artefact that enables the ability to spread and sprinkle the words around. And there I had it…personalised confetti!

I would get the words created in the form of personalised confetti and contact friends about the country and get them to filtrate the words in to society by leaving them in their wake everywhere they go! And in doing so photographing the evidence as they do this. I too of course will be doing the same

After much to-ing and fro-ing, checking type faces these where what I got!

Comedian Alex Horne

With the hope that Alexe Horne is able to use the words in some form or another that shall be a great form of influential person contributing towards the filtration of the words. He seems very eager and I certainly think he shall use the words…it’s just a matter of having the opportunity to use them!

He has however said he plans to use them at this years (2014) Fringe Festival in Edinburgh.

“what I need is a tv or radio appearance and I just don’t have any coming up. I tend to do a load of publicity in the run up to Edinburgh but that’s not till june/july”

Despite that being past the deadline for this module, I am certainly encouraging him to continue doing so…so watch this space and I shall see if I can capture some footage of it being used by him!

Reporters & Editors

I have been in contact with a fair number of reporters and editors but with no avail. It would appear that the use of a non-existent word is not encourage, allowed or seen to be professional of such people in the journalist field.

“I couldn’t use a new unrecognised word in the paper or on the Web I’m afraid…”

Despite back and forth conversation with Charles Arthur at the Guardian he responded rather disappointingly, “…Nope. I don’t use words without knowing their meaning unless they’re words I’ve made up myself to be honest…”

I also tried other reporters/editors at The Guardian and tried also with people from the Daily Mail but with no joy.

Copyrighters

Brother who knows has a friend who is a copyeditor/proofreader “…and posts on her business social media pages amusing pictures of language mistakes. She cross-posted one on her Facebook & Twitter pages last Sunday and it went viral in 24hours, got 500 retweets (including by a comedian/actor and The Poke) and increased her followers from a couple hundred to over 2,500! And it got reposted on my timeline a couple of days later by a friend that she doesn’t even know.”

Unfortunately she too was unable to assist due to the fact that “…most of her clients on her social media business pages with whom she’s gained a good reputation for language/grammatical accuracy. So propagating new words which aren’t yet established or have new meanings created for them, wouldn’t fit in with that I’m afraid.”

But later you’ll see this last part may not be such a disappointment see Success on Twitter…

As Connie Eble highlights in her summary of Sociolinguistics, “the study of how language serves and is shaped by the social nature of human beings.” It looks in to how society and language works, how they relate to each and how it changes across various environments. All of which is controlled by us as humans and how we interact with each other. Sociolinguistics can look at how language is communicate whether that is by pen on paper or by computer or by chalk boards. It also investigates the different dialects used in language and how this differs amongst locations and social class or ethnicity. There is also the understanding of the use of slang and looking at how language amongst age ranges and genders.

Sociolinguistics also looks at how contact has a role to play in language. It discusses how close knit communities have a reluctance to adopt new language shifts yet those communities who may cross over to other communities may adopt new styles of language. An example in this would be those who use many social networking sites would be more likely to adopt change as those who do not use any social media sites.

In summary:

Sociolinguistics is the study of how language serves and is shaped by the social nature of human beings.

Sociolinguistics analyzes the many and diverse ways in which language and society entwine.

This vast field of inquiry requires and combines insights from a number of disciplines, including linguistics, sociology, psychology and anthropology.

The basic premise of sociolinguistics is that language is variable and changing.

Some social factors are attributes of the speaker — for example, age, gender, socio-economic class, ethnicity and educational level.

Language is forever changing. As discussed in Sociolinguistics society is changing and therefore language changes with it, new inventions bring new words and new ways of saying and describing things.

Within language change a important area I want to investigate is Lexical Change.

Lexical Change

Lexical change is the change in the meaning or use of a word, or change over time in the popular use of one word or phrase over another. New words or phrases can spread like wild fire especially with the use of social media playing such an important part in peoples day to day lives

From the word wireless, we would probably assume this statement was made by an older person, as radio is now the more common term. If you hear the word wireless used by a younger speaker, they are almost certainly using it as an adjective rather than a noun and referring to wireless technology, from WAP phones to blackberries and laptops. This illustrates perfectly how words can virtually disappear or gradually shift in meaning and usage.
