Advanced Design Practise: Question Time!

Now I have started all this research, as stated in Research Methods – Research After 4 Weeks! and brained dumped my findings so far my brain has been ticking away to how this research can be applied in to my Design Practice. But most important its about finding that topic, that question to focus my practice on! That’s the hardest part so far for me…I have so many areas I want to look in to that are of interest!

I asked so many questions here they all are:

  • Who uses the web/internet?
  • Can one image depicted in various ways result in different emotions/reactions?
  • Can I influence peoples decisions/predict peoples responses/emotions/thoughts?
  • What is usability?
  • How influential is the web?
  • What makes you remember?

Stage two of tackling that question/topic following plenty of research:

  • Can you influence someones behaviour by how you design and present things on the web?
  • Does green really mean go/proceed?
  • How can ‘The Framing Effect’ control peoples behaviour on the web?
  • Does ‘The Framing Effect’ work online?
  • How far does trust go for the internet
  • What is more secure, numbers, words or images? / What is more memorable?

Following the discussion around Hans Haacke his approach on questioning his practise asking himself and his audience has allowed me to form some theoretical questions for myself. Haacke ‘Why is art made.’ Me ‘Why do we have the internet’ to share information, make purchurses, communication. He creates his own voice through methods, recognisable objects, audience participation and situation. And this is where I start my thinking for how I may display my voice and discuss my thoughts about design through my practise.

In doing this I shall use sketchbooks, journals and create artefacts for audience engagement.

My initials thoughts have been surrounding pulling myself back from thinking I need to produce a fully functioning website. This is certainly not the case. I need to get back to the basics and present my audience through ideally a digital form, sceneraios. Presenting them with cases for them to react in certain ways. This way I gather information on how people respond when presented with such artefacts. initially I would like to re-enact the sceneraios founded in my research from other psychologists but in a digital form, bringing them up to date.

Having chatted to Alan I have realised that many if not nearly all of the questions above are surrounding one straight forward topic…

How can the design of the web influence and create trust for the audience who use it?

I finally breathe a HUGE sigh of relief. And now let’s get this artefact going!

I have discovered that I need to think how can I relate this research so that it is also engaging to others, my audience and not just to satisfy my interest. I need to open other people’s eyes to my ideas of thinking about the virtual world.
